SEO Questions Answered: Bernadette Coleman of Advice Interactive Group

How many SEO experts does it take to answer nine questions? As many as we can get! When you’re talking about something as dynamic as SEO, there’s no shortage of right answers. But the one thing all of our interviewees have in common is their direct involvement with the SEO industry. These are not SEO experts in theory. These are practicing search engine marketers. Today, we’ll be hearing from Bernadette Coleman, CEO of Advice Interactive Group.

When did you become involved with SEO & why?

I became involved in SEO when I was in investment banking and many of the Companies we were working with were internet startups. At some point I became intrigued with the process and complexity of SEO and it became a passion of mine.

What role does guest blogging play in SEO? How can businesses get started with guest blogging and where do you recommend beginning?

Guest blogging is an important part of our SEO process if done correctly. Just posting content on other sites will not work if the quality is not there, if the subject is irrelevant and the post is written poorly. 

What do you see on the horizon for Google algorithm updates and how do you recommend businesses prepare for these?

Trying to anticipate and prepare for what Google will throw our way is a loosing battle, following Google’s best practices and doing SEO the right way from the beginning will be your best strategy. For those of you that have had some issues in the past, and or have worked with an SEO company that has “taken shortcuts” you need to get on the right track with your SEO strategy right away. 

Backlinks versus content: Who wins?

Good content = Great backlinks. That’s all I have to say!

How do you see the landscape of social media affecting organic search in the future?

Social media is here to stay and it needs to be a part of every seo strategy, including local search. Ignore it and you will loose.

Do you have any advice for a small business needing content but may not have the resources to consistently create content?

Hire a good SEO company that can create a content strategy that makes sense and is in your budget. Use a service like ghostblogger, or textbroker to buy content, just make sure that you edit the content and make it yours, trade content with others in your industry or ask your employees to submit a blog a month…

If you were to start optimizing a site for search engines from the ground up, what would you do?

First things first, look at the site architecture. You need a good foundation before you can start building.

Do you have any great SEO tips?

My best SEO tip is don’t try to buck the system with tricks. Follow best practices in your SEO strategy, write good, no great content that your visitors want to read and the rest will follow.
