We’re back! Our second SEO expert interview is with Cyrus Shepard of a little place called SEO Moz—now known simply as Moz. Moz is all about tracking and monitoring the SEO health of your website. Their blog also puts out some really great content based on loads of data they collect surveying members of the SEO community.

Here’s what Cyrus had to say to our questions:

When did you become involved with SEO & why?

I was a restaurant waiter for the better part of 15 years before getting into SEO. I had built a website and wanted to market it, so I signed up with SEOmoz. What I didn’t realize is they were located in Seattle, where I lived. A year and a half later, I was working for the company.

What role does guest blogging play in SEO? How can businesses get started with guest blogging and where do you recommend beginning?

There’s good guest blocking, and there’s spammy guest blogging. We expect Google to further crack down on guest posts located on off-topic sites, with over-optimized anchor text, and low-quality posts.

On the other hand, guest posting isn’t going away and can still be a valuable tactic for SEOs. The best advice is to only post on the highest quality sites you can find – sites that will send your website traffic, regardless of any SEO benefit. Also, write the highest quality articles possible, and make sure you are adding value to your guest posting efforts. Would you recommend this article to a friend?

Finally, don’t abuse your guest posting anchor text. I like to forgo author “boxes” and link to an asset on my own site within the body of the post. Of course, in order to do this, you have to have something worth linking to in the first place.

What do you see on the horizon for Google algorithm updates and how do you recommend businesses prepare for these?

We know from Google that they will soon release Penguin 2.0, which aims to further target low quality backlinks. There’s also a hint that Google may also be incorporating author authority signals into its algorithms, so that authors who are an authority rise to the top in rankings. For more hints, watch this recent video from Google’s Matt Cutts – http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/what-to-expect-in-seo-in-the-coming-months/

Backlinks versus content: Who wins?

Both. It’s the Chicken and the egg. But in this case, you need content first, so I guess the egg wins.

How do you see the landscape of social media affecting organic search in the future?

Social media signals already play a factor in Google’s algorytm, and we expect that trend to continue. That said, social media is also an important channel all by itself, even without the ranking signals. That’s why I encourage folks to think of social media as valuable as its own set of channels, and optimize these channels for user experience, and not necessarily for ranking factor considerations.

By the way, if you haven’t adopted Google+ yet for your business, I would highly recommend doing so.

Do you have any advice for a small business needing content but may not have the resources to consistently create content?

Instead of creating more content, create better content. Make sure your site content is excellent in that it answers all customer questions and helps your sales process – that’s a start. But instead of creating a blog and writing everyday for the sake of creating content that no one wants to read, instead put that effort into creating 3-4 bigger pieces of content each year.

I talked to one webmaster recently who sold adult diapers. Not an interresting subject for small business. So he created an ebook about choosing adult diapers that was a hit with elderly centers and certain doctor’s offices.

If you were to start optimizing a site for search engines from the ground up, what would you do?

A big question to answer here. Let me refer you to 2 blog posts:

http://www.seomoz.org/blog/a-basic-yet-essential-pre-post-content-launch-checklist-with-guidelines
http://www.seomoz.org/blog/how-to-rank

What do you think about the Bing Challenge? Are you a fan of Bing or Team Google?

Marketing aside, I love what Bing is doing. That said, I’m mostly a Google boy.

Do you have any great SEO tips?

SEO is easy – building great stuff is hard. Spend your most important time building creative assets – whether it’s your product, your website or your content. Then when it comes time for marketing, the process is much easier.

Other SEO tips: Test everything. A well designed site will perform better than one that delivers a sub-par user experience. The title tag is still one of the most important ranking factors, but don’t over-optimize it. Build relationships, not links.

— — —

Thanks Cyrus!

To kick of this year’s Social Madness contest (vote here — we’re in the “Large” category), FindMyCompany is running a series of SEO Interviews we’ve conducted over the last few weeks. It’s been a great way for us to reach out to some of our most respected industry peers and get fresh perspectives on all things search engine marketing related. We are happy to say that we have gotten some truly insightful feedback. Big thanks to everyone who participated.

(Note: All interviews conducted over email. Answers appear in full unless otherwise noted.)

Kicking things off, we have Ben Pfeiffer, Founder and President of RankSmart Search Marketing.

When did you become involved with SEO & why?

I become involved with SEO and internet marketing in 1999, while I was still in high school. I was president the marketing club DECA and also was very good working with computers and the internet. It was kind of a natural fit so to say that I was attracted to learning how to using marketing on the web. I had a fascination with search engines at the time and wanted to figure out how to get websites included within the search engine results. At the time no one besides the librarian really knew how search engines worked. They used to give you these nifty sheets explaining how to use BOOLEN operators in a search which no one really paid much attention to. I started to discover you could submit websites to the search engines/directories so I started an early business doing website submissions. I became really good at getting websites listed in the Yahoo Directory, as Yahoo search was powered by their directory at the time. Google was still mostly unknown at the time, but I also focused on it because it wasn’t too hard to submit there. I started to make money off of website submissions and it started a career into SEO and many other businesses I started or was a part of.

What role does guest blogging play in SEO? How can businesses get started with guest blogging and where do you recommend beginning?

Guest blogging is still a valid strategy a webmasters can use to market their products or services. A lot of people are still using guest blogging as an approach to build links to their website. Because they look at guest blogging as a way to build links the focus is often not on the content, it’s the links at the bottom of the article. So the content suffers. It’s horrible. If you go out and try to get placements with horrible content that no one wants to read you are going to get horrible placements on low quality websites and have a low success rate.

I recommend webmasters start slow and really spend a lot of time developing some amazing content that it will be hard for another website not to want to place on their website. This can mean forgoing a link to you website and instead building your authority in a specific topic with authorship. I would also recommend webmasters write content specifically for a website. Write the content before you even contact the website and tailor it specifically to their audience. Add value to their business and do not be self-serving in your approach to guest blogging.

What do you see on the horizon for Google algorithm updates and how do you recommend businesses prepare for these?

Matt Cutts recently announced that there will be quite a few dramatic updates this coming summer. It will be another tough summer for businesses that depend on Google traffic. If they haven’t done so already they need to start aligning their website to get away from any spammy, manipulative SEO approaches that will definitely get them in hot water over the coming months. Even if you made it through Penguin and Panda last year and think you are sitting pretty, you still have to be prepared.

I would recommend businesses start looking at ways to increase stickiness on their website through conversion optimization, content marketing, and site redesigns. Look at ways to build links that are natural. Root out duplicate content and get rid of it. Take an inventory of your backlinks and find out which ones might be suspicious or included over-optimized anchor text. Invest in real business activities that not only increase the bottomline but make your authority in your area.

Lastly, consider taking a 3 month vacation and come back in late August after the dust settles.

Backlinks versus content: Who wins?

At this point I would say content. Google is expertly good at measuring the reaction of the web to your content. If you have crappy content, you get crappy results. Really really good content is winning right now for many reasons.

How do you see the landscape of social media affecting organic search in the future?

I think it has been a slower effect than most SEO and marketers have anticipated. I can still remember sitting in conference sessions many years ago with speakers telling the audience that if they don’t get on the social bandwagon they are going to fail miserably at their businesses. We haven’t really seen that quite yet. It’s takes a ton of social signals to make massive impacts on a pages rankings just by social means. If anything social is just allowing Google to spider the web more effectively and they are quietly collecting usage data and signals that will become a larger part of the algorithms over time. We have already seen how authorship/Author Rank while slow to start is starting to have a much higher influence in how high a page is getting ranked.

What do you think of recent LinkedIn search/social changes and how will this affect LinkedIn for business?

LinkedIn made quite a few changes in 2012 and I hope that the impact of these changes will be positive for businesses. Some of the complaints are centered around that LinkedIn is looking more and more like Facebook in that content/updates/whatever is continuing to stream in like a newsfeed.

I have had quite a few clients express new interest in LinkedIn as a marketing tactic recently. The biggest obstacle for them is that it’s still rather complicated to figure out. They don’t see the value yet. One client in particular is frustrated how their job postings hardly get seen among the clutter of larger companies postings. They feel they are at a disadvantage. The ranking algorithms still have a way to go I feel.

Do you have any advice for a small business needing content but may not have the resources to consistently create content?

They aren’t trying hard enough. There are a ton of writers out there wanting to work and write content for businesses on a consistent basis. You can easily find a writer by using Facebook, LinkedIn, Craigslist, Google, local paper, referral. Don’t be afraid to say no to writer you don’t think is very good. Get samples of their writing. Be willing to train that author to write for your company. If they won’t write according to your specifications, fire them. One of the best ways I find writers, is I ask them to generate ideas for me. I want writers that are creative and going to work hard on the content they produce. If they baulk at the idea of generating content ideas for you, then move on. Find one that will.

Lastly, if you don’t have the resources then I would recommend you consider writing yourself. Try it out, after a few bumps, you might find yourself getting good at it and this is the ultimate low cost way to put out content.

If you were to start optimizing a site for search engines from the ground up, what would you do?

Do a ton of research into your industry. Do that research again and look for niches and opportunities you can shine or that are underserved. Ask around and talk in person to people that are in that space and get ideas.

Next, focus on information architecture and usability. Use some free tools to wireframe the layout and map out the content pages you are going to need. Think about all the phrases you want to target and how you will deliver that to users. Make it the best you can.

What do you think about the Bing Challenge? Are you a fan of Bing or Team Google?

Bing.

Do you have any great SEO tips?

Tips are kinda over-rated these days for SEO. No one tip or magic tactic is going to get you ranked well in the search engines. It’s so much more than that these days. SEO has matured into a such a wide spectrum of activities from social media, authorship, content marketing, usability, technical SEO, etc.. that contributes to a good overall strategy that contributes to a success in acquiring organic traffic.

If I could give some good SEO advice to someone, it would be to stop trying to game the search engines. The days of trying to spam or link manipulate your way into good rankings is over. Companies need to focus on bringing value to their customers and content producers need to up their game so their content produces actionable results and extends their authority on a specific topic.

In 2006, Stathis Edel founded FindMyCompany.com—a pioneer in the Austin SEO industry. Before that he was an IT Manager, and before that he was a triathlete and military brat. But Stathis has always been a tech guy. He needs to know how things work.

Schedule Mr. Edel to speak at your event.

Once he set his sights on figuring out search engine marketing, it was only a matter of time before FindMyCompany.com would become one of the leading SEO companies in Austin and beyond. Now Stathis has found himself in the fortunate position of sharing his experiences and knowledge with interested members of the business community. As it turns out, there’s a lot of them!

Internet Marketing Speaker for Seminars, Luncheons, Events

SEO Speaker Stathis Edel is available for all types of speaking engagements. Over the years he’s led discussions at local business meetups, informal lunches, and large-scale events. Stathis was the primary speaker at the FMC-organized “On Tap for Google” Seminar Series—a recurring event held in Austin at the Alamo Drafthouse.

Making Informed Decisions

Stathis’ primary mission during these talks is to clear up misinformation swirling around the SEO industry, allowing businesses to make informed decisions on how to spend their marketing dollars. When you’re dealing with a marketing category that’s still so new—and includes such misunderstood subcategories as social media marketing and pay-per-click—it’s absolutely critical to have access to the latest information.

That’s our goal: Make information about SEO understandable to the public and help businesses apply it. Questions?

Bad SEO is worse than no SEO at all. A few critical mistakes can torpedo your whole effort. That said, we’re happy you’ve shown a sudden interest in your search engine health, but let’s be smart about it. Just as crash dieting doesn’t work, and can have serious longterm consequences, binge optimizing isn’t wise either. Google will definitely notice that fat pile of links you farmed or the new keyword-stuffed content you posted, but that’s not always a good thing…

Here’s what NOT to do…

1.) Buy a ton of links real cheap (don’t buy expensive ones either)

The jig is up. Google doesn’t appreciate people buying links for the sole purpose of boosting their search standing, so they put a stop to it. Or rather, Google won’t stop you from throwing money away on bulk link packages, but they will make sure you don’t get rewarded for it. In fact, if you have any legitimate link cred already built up, adding paid links to the mix will only dilute your site’s overall link juice. Links are still an important part of SEO, but the number of links doesn’t matter nearly as much as quality and relevance.

Alternative: Put good content on your site and make it easy for people to share (‘tweet,’ ‘like’ and ‘+1’ buttons). Contribute to industry forums. Be active on social networks. Etcetera.

2.) Forget to give your website a title

You wouldn’t forget to name your child, would you? A website without a title is like a lost puppy without tags. The title we’re referring to is not the name of your business or the header of your content. No, we’re talking about your official declaration of name and purpose to search engines. We’re talking about a title tag. You can usually find the title tag listed at the top of your internet browser.

Here’s ours:

Alternative: Name it. Your title tag should include your company name along with a few of your most important search terms. This is your single most valuable piece of SEO real estate, so don’t waste it. As always, don’t go overboard. Best practice is to have between 70 and 100 characters in a title tag.

3.) Be clueless about what people search for

Nobody knows what a Mark5 flashpan hotswap dongle is (not even us, and we made it up). Proprietary messaging can be important for selling products but not necessarily for helping people find them. The main goal of SEO is to help new customers find you. These people know what they want, and you have what they want, but they don’t care what you call it. Not yet.

Alternative: Make sure you describe your products and services in plain language on your website. Ask yourself, in laymen’s terms, what is it I sell or do? Or, better yet, how do you describe your business to your parents? Everyone uses Google, so that’s the audience you’re optimizing for.

*Use Google’s search volume tool to get keyword ideas.

4.) Steal content, spam content, hide content

One of the best things you can do on your own to boost website rankings is to regularly refresh page content and/or update your blog. You can go a step further by placing keywords in your content, but be careful—this is where things often get fouled up. For every hundred words of text, you should only mention ONE or TWO keywords. That’s it. Furthermore, they need to be weaved into the text naturally, not obviously tacked on. One of the easiest ways to do this is by putting a headline above each paragraph of text.

Like so:

— — —

Austin SEO Company – Get Yo’ Rank On

What does it take to get you found? FindMyCompany is an Website Marketing company based in Austin, Texas…yada, yada, yada…

— — —

In regards to stealing and hiding content, just don’t do it. If someone else wrote your content or built your website, use Copyscape to verify it’s 100% unique. Hiding content includes using a font size that’s drastically smaller than the rest of your site to save space, or more archaic tactics (which are also frowned upon) such as making your font color the same as your background. Google no like.

5.) Your homepage is all pretty pictures and no meaty text

Minimal design is all the rage these days. A lot of people say they don’t want to “clutter up” their homepage with lines of boring text. Unfortunately, that boring text (along with your title tag) is your best way to tell Google what you’re all about. Sure, Google will index your pictures and videos, but don’t expect to get much search traffic from that alone.

Alternative: Write not boring text. Make your website copy stand out as much as your pictures. Give it spunk. Use keywords, but not too many. The minimum amount of text recommended for a homepage is 250 words.

If only there were a set of tools that would monitor my site for me…

And they should be free…and endorsed by the gatekeepers themselves..and…Hi there, meet Google’s Webmaster Tools. Webmaster Tools is Google’s free utility for monitoring the health of your domain. It will ping you if Google is having trouble crawling your site and will alert you if your site is infected with malware. It can also guide you through some basic optimizations, such as adding a sitemap and stopping certain URLs from being crawled. Although that’s about it from a practical standpoint.

To be clear, Webmaster Tools is a valuable resource for any site owner, but is by no means a replacement for full on search engine marketing. As we know, successful SEO still takes a boatload of hard work.
